Karen Obuhanych was raised in California where she enjoyed playing sports and doing anything creative. Inspired by annual trips to Hawaii, where her father grew up, Karen moved to Oahu to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. Karen currently resides on the Big Island of Hawaii.
It is the simple element of happiness that drives Karen Obuhanych and her artwork. Nature presents little gifts of joy in amazing compositions and color every day. Karen strives to capture these moments in each painting.
“Strictly For The Birds” is a collection of acrylic bird-themed paintings. Each painting has its own personality and the collection as a whole is all about color, whimsy and joy. Karen prefers to paint birds found in Hawaii and California, drawing from the playful character of birds and how they relate to human behavior.
“Surf’s Up!” surfboards are shaped by Karen from surfboard foam blanks. When shaping, Karen prefers retro silhouettes with wider surface area and fun tail designs. Since each surfboard is created with aesthetic size and shape in mind, the final piece may not conform to standard functional surfboard design. Each surfboard is unique and may include stamp patterns, collage and layers of metal leafing. Every art piece is glassed extra thick to bring out the colors and shine.
