“One day Pele suggested to her sisters that they visit the ocean at Ha’ena in Puna to enjoy the surf and gather shellfish. Pele chose a cool, shady spot on a slab of lava and fell asleep. As she slept, a dream came over her…
She was drawn to a hula performance happening on the island of Kauai. There Pele approached the handsome young chief named Lohi’au. When their eyes met, he was captivated by her intensity and vibrancy. After the performance, Lohi’au invited Pele to come with him and share in the hospitality of his home. After 3 days she proposed to him that he come to stay with her in Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii. He agreed to come and Pele, in her spirit form, disappeared before his very eyes.
Pele had been asleep for 3 days, and some of the anxious sisters thought she might be dead. None of the sisters dared to attempt to awaken Pele. To do so would undoubtedly incur serious consequences from the fiery Pele should she actually just be sleeping.
The sisters decided it would be best, and safest, to ask young Hi’iakaikapoliopele to approach the sleeping Pele. Hi’iaka, Pele’s most beloved sister, was sent for. In her youthful innocence, Hi’iaka shrugged off the fears of the older sisters and promptly sat at Pele’s side reciting a chant, encouraging her to awake. Instantly the roaming spirit form of Pele returned to her physical sleeping body, and the volcano goddess came to life.”
